The repercussions of a simple wish

November 8th, 2010

The repercussions of a simple wishI sometimes like to think of hypothetical situations, or as my primary school teachers called it, day dreaming. Personally I think it’s a great way to stretch those brain muscles and keep them ready for when you have to come up with an actual fresh idea.

So I had one of these ideas recently and I thought it’s actually interesting enough for me to write a short article about. It’s about the repercussions of a simple wish. I know this isn’t a new idea and some books have been written about the topic before. One that comes to mind was something called “The rabbit’s paw” which I read in high school at some point.

So as some of you might know I work in Sea Point and if you work here (or any other coast line town) you will know that Seagulls are public enemy number one. In breading season they just become very aggressive, very noisy and just tough to get along with (like teenagers).

I was thinking, how nice it would be if I can have 1 wish. That way I can use it on the Seagulls and make them quiet. That way they can go on with their business and I can go on with mine.

Then it struck me… If Seagulls would become completely quiet, how long would it take them to start changing their hunting patterns, I mean, they will be able to catch almost anything. They will be like eagles, except large numbers of really aggressive eagles.

That amount of “easy” food will make them have more chicks, because it will be feasible for them to have more babies as there will be enough food to sustain a larger flock.

OK, so now we have a very large flock of super quiet, aggressive, eagle-like birds that will be hunting everything that moves.

That brings me to the next question: How long would it take them to figure out they can work in groups to catch food? Once they figure that out, the human race is pretty much doomed, because we will simply become food for the flock that will become even bigger now that the prey is in high availability.

So because I didn’t want to listen to their screeching, I wished away their sound, which turned them into lethal killing machines and before you know it you can’t work in coastal town or even go to the beach. All because of 1 wish..
